An Unprecedented Shower

Updated: Aug 11, 2020

A long anticipated shower is a huge respite after days of humid summer. But does rain wet only parched soils ? What about thirsty minds ?

A delayed downpour is like the sudden visit of an old crush .. a parted lover returning back to his/ her jilted love at last .. or even a poet's platonic inspiration fighting all adversities, even the mind's hesitancy in coming out of the confinement of anonymity .. the irresistible urge of creation to mingle with his/ her creator .. when all hopes were just about to be lost.

Rain is compared with a young girl in this poem; an attribute of nature which spread greenery all around her .. an epitome of innocence, pure love; though playful, unaware of the harm her whims and fancies could bring upon. She is like the young river which amazes both with her ferocity and charm, when she cascades off from the mountains; breaking banks, flooding plains, till she matures into a woman and creates her own deltas, newer worlds, nurturing new life beings ..

THE POEM

1.

So you did come at last ?

How many times your scent had promised your advent ?

Yet I had opened my door only to let in

An unsatiated, humidity filled afternoon

What pleasure do you derive staying away from me ?

Are your doe eyes lowered bashfully

When you look at my name ?

Or are they playful like the clouds ?

Changing direction suddenly

Depriving my mind to float like paper boats

Seeking an alien land .. kindled by your familiar dreams

2.

I sometimes wonder ..

Does your smile flow like a river learning to break banks ?

Or is it the innocent pitter-patter of water drops ?

What do you pamper your whims with ..

Your eyes or your smile ?

What breaks my heart ?

Your absence .. your silence ?

Or this long wait of going near you ?

Of quenching the thirst of my eyes ?

Beholding the beauty of lush greenery

Rolled out on a barren existence

The sprinkling of life-saving nectar

On a planet robbed of human emotions

A cold melancholy igniting wild passions

Can a poet ignore your beckoning ?

3.

Since when have you been running away from me ?

Since when had I wanted to hold you ?

And listen to your heart beats till eternity

Search the whole world for words

Matching with reverberations that define life

Watch an unruly stream grow into a matured river

Changing your whims from breaking to holding now

4.

Like a drought-ridden day scorched with pains

I crane out my neck and inhale the scent of wet earth

And let your memories wet my nose, cheeks, lips, eyelids

How trivial they appear to be other times

Just a few exchange of pleasantries .. best wishes

Yet how painful they become the moment you're away

Where have your deluge carried away my poems ?

Even I too had wanted to flutter around like butterflies

Sing praises of sun, moon and waterfalls

Yearned to make fairy land, my only abode

5.

My eyes inundate the tsunami in my heart

Don't you know what keeps the poet alive in me ?

My words flow only when they're driven by your thoughts

You give wings to my imagination and I fly

To play hide and seek with life from the clouds

My words are like withered leaves of ruthless winter

Struggling to breathe through a suffocating summer

Until they are healed by your touch

To become poetry and mend billions of hearts
