Valentine Blues: The Make-up

Updated: Jul 6, 2020

It was the eve of Valentine Day and Samir had not expected any difference in Riya’s behavior when he returned home. It had not been even a year since their marriage and they had been picking up altercations very frequently over the costs of presents exchanged, the lack in hospitality shown to guests and the quality of food served in the receptions. Recently things went to such extremes that Samir threatened his wife with a ‘divorce’. It was since then that Riya became serene to her husband’s constant bickering and both of them continued living like aliens, hardly talking to each other; rolling on to the ends of the bed, taking care that they did not touch each other.

To hide his feelings of frustration, Samir took to playing a game on his mobile, when his wife’s message beeped in unexpectedly. ‘Come whatever may, I’d never allow our relation of seven ages, which we promised to each other over the circles around fire, to come to an end so easily. Happy Valentine Day, Jaan’, it said. Samir looked up at his wife and saw tears in her eyes, discovering the dark circles under them for the first time. Feeling a sudden lump in his throat he immediately held his wife in his arms. ‘Let’s make up for the lost days’, he said after sometime, as he slowly took out a gift-wrapped teddy from his bag followed by chocolates, her favourite perfume and a bunch of roses. Then leaving an amazed Riya putting her hands over her mouth, he went down on his knees and proposed her once again.
